Hathersage, Bretton Clough, Barrel Inn, Abney Moor & the River Derwent

Two manor houses of the Eyre family, wooded cloughs, Derbyshire's highest pub, wonderful moorland, incredible views and walking alongside the Derwent.

Field paths and quiet lanes lead up to Highlow Hall, from where a path drops steeply down into the wooded confines of Highlow Brook. A muddy path leads up through this valley to reach Stoke Ford then heads up through Bretton Clough (boggy in places) before a steep climb through woodland to Bretton. After some road walking, a path drops steeply down into the upper reaches of Bretton Clough then climbs to reach Abney Grange. A path then heads across Abney Moor to join the stony track of Shatton Lane, which skirts across Shatton Moor before a rough path heads across Offerton Moor to reach Offerton Hall. A grassy path leads down to join the banks of the River Derwent from where a riverside path returns to Leadmill Bridge.

Caution: Several steep sections in particular the descent into Bretton Clough from Hucklow Edge. The path up through Highlow Brook and Bretton Clough is muddy.
