£ 2.50 The Southern Gritstone Edges
Submitted by Hiking on Fri, 20/11/2009 - 00:44From Baslow, a track leads us uphill to Wellington's Monument on Baslow Edge. The 'Gritstone Edges' form an escarpment, two-tiered for some of its length. From these abrupt sandstone crags, so popular with climbers, the slope descends gently eastwards.
On its outward journey, our route follows paths north along the top of Baslow, Curbar and Froggatt Edges, then climbs slightly higher to the overlying escarpment of White Edge. The path along here leads us south, then continues along the top of the much less frequented Gardom's Edge. We also take in Chatsworth Edge, before finally descending through Chatsworth Park to finish.
The views along the way justify the popularity of these crag-top footpaths, although some sections along White Edge can be muddy after wet weather. A short exposed section of footpath along the top of Chatsworth Edge can be a problem for those that suffer from vertigo, but this can be avoided by taking a lower-level footpath.
Deer can often be sighted in Chatsworth Park - an added bonus on this route.
